Professor Fabio Barili is Head of the University Cardiac Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio and TD-B Researcher in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Milan.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2000 from the University of Milan and at the same university obtained his specialization in Cardiac Surgery in 2005.
In the same year he completed a fellowship at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York (USA).
In 2009 he obtained a PhD in Surgical and Transplant Sciences and a second-level Master's degree in Medical Statistics and Statistical Methods for Epidemiology.
In 2017 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor (Second Level) in the Academic Sector 06/E1 Cardio-Thoracic-Vascular Surgery and in 2023 the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor (First Level) in the same academic sector.
From 2005 to 2008 Professor Fabio Barili worked at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS directed by Professor Paolo Biglioli.
From 2008 to January 2024 he worked at the Cardiac Surgery Unit of the S. Croce e Carle Hospital in Cuneo, where he developed a specific interest in minimally invasive surgery and transcatheter approaches to mitral valve disease.
Since February 2024, at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, he performs all adult cardiac surgery procedures, with a particular focus on minimally invasive surgery.
Professor Fabio Barili currently serves as Scientific Secretary of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery and is Visiting Scientist at the Department of Epidemiology of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA.
He is a founding member of INTEGRITTY, an international research group aimed at evaluating the integrity of scientific information, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Fondazione Cuore Domani.
From 2019 to 2023 he was Head of the Research and Methods Task Force of the European Association of CardioThoracic Surgery.
From 2010 to 2016 he was a member of the Aegis Cardiovascular Research Foundation, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, and from 2015 to 2016 he served as Statistical Consultant for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA. From 2014 to 2018 and from 2021 to 2022 he was a member of the Nucleus of the ESC Working Group on Cardiovascular Surgery.
In 2012 he participated in the Review Committee of the “2012 ESC-ACCF-AHA-WHF Expert Consensus Document on Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction” and in 2021 in the Review Committee of the ESC/EACTS 2021 European Guidelines on the management of valvular heart disease.
He has participated as Investigator or Co-Investigator in numerous national and international research projects. As Principal Investigator, he won the 2013 Finalized Research and Young Researchers Call of the Italian Ministry of Health, receiving funding for the research project “The PRIORITY Study – Predicting Long Term Outcomes After Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery”.
He is Co-Investigator of the IRC Investigator Grant 2018 (IG-2018) “Immune checkpoint neutralization to recover anti-tumor Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell activity and reinforce anti-CD38 therapy in myeloma”. He is a member of the Trial Steering Committee of the ROMA Trial (Randomized Comparison of the Clinical Outcome of Single Versus Multiple Arterial Grafts) of Cornell University, NYC, USA and the University of Toronto, Canada.
He has organized or contributed to the organization of more than 30 national and international congresses.
He has participated as invited speaker or moderator in more than 70 scientific conferences in Italy and abroad and has presented oral communications or posters at more than 80 scientific meetings in Italy and abroad.
Since 2018 he has collaborated with the Department of Epidemiology of the Regional Health Service of Lazio ASL Roma 1, operational reference center for the National Outcomes Program. Since 2021 he has collaborated with the National Agency for Regional Health Services (AGENAS) as a member of the Working Group on “Audit Activities” within the National Outcomes Program.
He is a member of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (since 2009), the European Association of CardioThoracic Surgery (since 2009) and the European Society of Cardiology (since 2018).
From 2015 to 2023 he served as Associate Statistical Editor of The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and since 2019 he has been Associate Editor of The Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Italian Journal of Cardiology and a reviewer for major journals in adult cardiology and cardiovascular surgery.
He has authored 131 scientific publications indexed in PubMed. The total number of citations of his scientific publications is 9,597; his H-index is 24 (Scopus, 13/5/2024).
