Prof. Francesco Bandello is the Director of the Ophthalmology Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan. He is Full Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the School of Specialization in Ophthalmology at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan.

He is President of the National College of Full Professors of Ophthalmology (CONPROSO), President of the ESASO Foundation (European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology), President of the European Ophthalmological Academy, Vice-President of EuroLam, and Past President of EURETINA.

Prof. Bandello is Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Ophthalmology, member of the American Ophthalmological Society (AOS), member of the Board of Directors of SISO (Italian Society of Ophthalmological Sciences), member of the National Technical Committee for the Prevention of Blindness and Low Vision, member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, and of the National Academy of Medicine. He is also a former board member of the Jules Gonin Club and the Macula Society.

His main areas of interest are retinal diseases (diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, venous and arterial occlusions, etc.), cataracts, and the involvement of the visual system in systemic diseases.

He is co-author of 12 books, has served as a peer reviewer for NEI funding applications, is co-author of 1,045 PubMed-indexed articles, and serves as Principal Investigator in several clinical studies conducted according to ICH/GCP standards, mainly focused on retinal diseases.
