Giovanna Cantarella

Professor Giovanna Cantarella is a specialist in Otorhinolaryngology and Phoniatrics at Casa di Cura La Madonnina, where she focuses in particular, though not exclusively, on laryngeal diseases at all stages of life.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1979 from the University of Naples Federico II and specializing in 1984 in Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Pathology at the University of Milan, she obtained at the same university further specializations in Maxillofacial Surgery (1990) and Phoniatrics (1994). In the United States she passed the ECFMG and VQE examinations for the recognition of her medical degree in the USA.
During her academic training and scientific collaborations, Professor Cantarella also had the opportunity to work with important international institutions such as Hermann Hospital in Houston, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, St. Vincent Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
She also established international collaborations with clinicians and bioengineers with the aim of promoting research activities in voice disorders, including through the use of artificial intelligence, developing original techniques for the treatment of vocal cord paralysis.
Her professional activity was carried out for many years at the IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico Foundation in Milan as a Consultant Physician in the Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery Unit and as Associate Professor at the University of Milan.
During her professional career at the Policlinico of Milan, she established a laryngology and phonosurgery service and promoted the development of a new service dedicated to neonatal and pediatric laryngology for the treatment of congenital and acquired obstructive airway diseases in neonates and children.
From 2019 to 2025 she was also Director of the Residency School in Audiology and Phoniatrics.
A member of prestigious national and international scientific societies, she is the author of 141 publications in international journals, about 80 in national journals, books, and approximately 400 presentations at National and International Congresses. Her H-index is 35 (November 2025), with total citations: 4642 (Google Scholar), of which 3275 since 2020. Since 2022 she has been included among the World’s Top 2% Scientists.
