Prof. Luigi Bonavina is a General Surgeon and collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina. He is also Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Milan.
He trained at the University of Padua, where he obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He completed his PhD in the United States at the University of Chicago and Creighton University, where he participated in clinical and experimental studies related to the pathophysiology and reconstructive surgery of the upper digestive tract.
His main clinical activity concerns diseases and surgery of the esophagus, particularly the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, Barrett’s esophagus, motility disorders, and esophageal cancer. He is an expert in minimally invasive surgical techniques performed through thoracoscopic, laparoscopic, and transoral approaches.
He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the European Surgical Association, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, and the Académie Nationale de Chirurgie. He is also a member of the permanent scientific committee of OESO, a member of the executive board of the World Society of Emergency Surgery, and a founding member of the American Foregut Society.
Prof. Bonavina is the author of numerous scientific articles and presentations at national and international congresses. He also contributed to the drafting of the Italian guidelines for esophageal cancer and is President of the Italian Esophagus Research Association (AIRES).
