Massimo Candiani

Massimo Candiani is Head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele and also collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan.

Since 2009, he has been a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Director of the School of Specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same university. Since 2018, he has been President of SEGI (Italian Society of Gynecological Endoscopy).

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1993, he specialized with honors in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University of Pavia. He continued his studies in France at the Polyclinique Gynécologie - Obstétrique, Médicine de la Reproduction, CHU Clermont Ferrand, Université de Clermont Ferrand and then, after returning to Italy, worked at the Gynecologic Oncology Service of the Mangiagalli Clinic and at the European Institute of Oncology.

In 2004, he became Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Milan and in 2005 joined the San Paolo Hospital in Milan, first as Head of the Endoscopic Surgery Unit and the Benign Gynecological Surgery Service, and later as Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic.

The continuous application and progressive development of endoscopic techniques since 1991 allowed Professor Candiani to initially approach the surgical treatment of benign gynecological diseases (surgery of the adnexa and uterus, endometriosis, pelvic floor disorders, uterine-vaginal malformations) and subsequently to introduce endoscopic techniques into gynecologic oncology for staging and/or radical procedures.

More recently, Professor Candiani has focused his interests on a new chapter in surgery, both for the correction of fetal spina bifida in utero and for the evaluation, diagnosis, and surgical treatment of malformations of the female genital system. The development and continuous application of vaginal surgery techniques complete his extensive surgical experience.

Professor Candiani is also a member of numerous national and international scientific societies: American Fertility Society; American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists; European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy; Italian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics; honorary member of the Ecuadorian Society of Gynecological Endoscopy affiliated with the Ibero-American Society of Gynecological Endoscopy.

He is a member of the board of SIELG (Italian Society of Endoscopy and Laser Therapy in Gynecology), of the Board of the University Center for Experimental Fetal Surgery of the University of Milan, of the Executive Board of the European Society for Gynaecologic Endoscopy (ESGE). He is also a board member of “Fondazione LANG – PARDI ITALIA” and Vice-President of “Fondazione Donna e Feto”.

From 2015 to 2018 he served as Vice-President of SEGI (Italian Society of Gynecological Endoscopy).

He has also been a member of the CSS (Superior Health Council) of the Ministry of Health. He is the author of approximately 300 articles published in leading national and international scientific journals.
