Mauro Ghirardi

Dr. Mauro Ghirardi is Head of the General Surgery Department at Istituto Clinico Città di Brescia. After obtaining his Degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1992 at the University of Brescia, in 1998 he attended the Abdominal Surgery Department of the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, where he received complete training in digestive system surgery, laparoscopic and open surgery, and where he deepened scientific aspects in the laboratory.

During his specialist training years, Dr. Ghirardi’s interest focused on the study of malignant and benign diseases of the digestive system, particularly of the colorectum. In 1999, he obtained the Specialty Diploma in Digestive System Surgery and Surgical Digestive Endoscopy at the University of Brescia with highest honors; moreover, from November 2001 to January 2003, he was Academic Expert in the subject of “General Surgery”.

His professional experience includes, between 1999 and 2002, a series of collaborations with Azienda Spedali Civili di Brescia as First-Level Medical Director in the field of General Surgery. From 2003, he then became Medical Director of the Vascular Surgery Department at Istituto Clinico Città di Brescia, a position held until 2013.

Winner in 2002 of the two-year Research Grant “Pathophysiological aspects of the surgical treatment of severe obesity”, he is member of important Scientific Societies such as the European Association of Coloproctology (ESCP), the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO).

His medical activity focuses on Diseases of the Digestive System, from diagnosis and endoscopic treatment of pre-neoplastic lesions (polypectomies, EMR), to surgical treatment with traditional and, above all, minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches. Specifically, he mainly treats neoplastic and benign diseases of the gallbladder, stomach and colorectum.
