Dr. Paola De Nardi is Head of a Functional Unit within the Colorectal Surgery Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Professor Pierpaolo Sileri. She is also an adjunct professor at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

After graduating with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1986, she completed her specialization in General Surgery with honors at the same university in 1991. Following her specialization, she undertook training periods abroad at St. Mark’s Hospital in London, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and the Hôpitaux Universitaires of Geneva.

She serves as coordinator of the Colorectal Cancer Disease Unit at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Ospedale San Raffaele. In this role, she leads a dedicated multidisciplinary team, promoting the integration of clinical research, technological innovation, and patient care, with the aim of providing personalized treatment pathways aligned with the most advanced scientific evidence.

Her clinical, surgical, and research activities focus primarily on neoplastic, benign, and functional diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. She has extensive experience in both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive techniques. She has also developed specific expertise in the study, diagnosis, and treatment of anal precancerous lesions and anal cancer, contributing to the development of the sentinel lymph node technique for disease staging and more targeted therapeutic approaches.

In parallel, she has focused on the study and implementation of treatments for fecal incontinence. In this field, she has collaborated at an institutional level as a member of the working group “Issues Related to Urinary and Fecal Incontinence” established within the Directorate General for Health Prevention of the Italian Ministry of Health, contributing to the development of national guidelines.

Dr. De Nardi is also the surgical lead for melanoma and collaborates with the corresponding Disease Unit for the multidisciplinary management of this malignancy.

She is additionally involved in the surgical treatment of benign conditions, with particular expertise in abdominal wall pathology and gallstone disease, ensuring minimally invasive approaches.

She is the author of more than 150 scientific articles published in international journals, regularly participates as a speaker and moderator at national and international conferences, is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and has served as President of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery.
