Dr. Paolo Giorgio Arcidiacono is Head of the Biliopancreatic Endoscopy and Endoscopic Ultrasound Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, where he specialized in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy. He also collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
Within the Unit he directs, approximately 3,000 biliopancreatic endoscopies are performed each year, including 2,000 Endoscopic UltraSonography (EUS) ± Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedures and 700 Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatographies (ERCP).
Dr. Arcidiacono participates as Principal Investigator, international Expert and Group Leader in several research projects such as the International Cancer of the Pancreas Screening (CAPS) Consortium (John Hopkins University Project Leader) and the European Study Group on Cystic Tumors of the Pancreas (PACYFIC) (Erasm University Rotterdam Project Leader).
He collaborates as contract professor with the School of Specialization in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan. He is Director of the School of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), of the Advanced Endoscopy Training School of the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), and of the EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound) School for the Training for Excellence Program (Pentax Europe).
He is author of 112 scientific publications (Scopus H-index 29), 10 book chapters, 20 reviews and 2 monographs, including the treatise Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis. His contributions have been published in American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical and Experimental Gastroenterology, Digestive and Liver Disease, Endoscopic Ultrasound, Pancreatology, Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology, United European Gastroenterology Journal, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Arthritis Research and Therapy, European Journal of Cancer, Clinical Translational Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, British Journal of Surgery, Annals of Oncology, Pancreas, British Journal of Radiology, European Journal of Surgical Oncology and Cochrane Systematic Review.
He is Associate Editor of Endoscopic Ultrasound and is or has been part of the Editorial Board of the following journals: Giornale Italiano Endoscopia Digestiva, Digestive and Liver Disease, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is Referee for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Endoscopy, Digestive and Liver Disease, Endoscopic Ultrasound, World Journal of Gastroenterology, World Journal of Endoscopy and World Journal of Oncology.
He is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), of which he is also Fellow (FASGE), of the Italian Association for Neuroendocrine Tumors (ITANET), of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), of the Executive Board of EURO-EUS, of the International Therapeutic of Endoscopic UltraSonography (EUS), and Co-founder of EUS ITALY - Italian Master Class on Endosonography.
He was the first internationally to test ablative cryothermoablation therapy under endoscopic ultrasound guidance for the treatment of pancreatic tumors.
