Professor Pierluigi Novellis is a thoracic surgeon in the Thoracic Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Professor Giulia Veronesi, and Associate Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele.
He graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery from Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma in 2008 and specialised with honours in Thoracic Surgery in 2014 at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – Policlinico A. Gemelli. His advanced training includes international observerships at leading centres worldwide: University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UK), Baptist Health South Florida – South Miami Hospital (USA), and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York (USA). He also further developed his methodological expertise by attending the course in Advanced Epidemiology and Statistics for Clinical Research at Humanitas University.
He specialises in the treatment of the full spectrum of thoracic diseases, both oncological, including lung, mediastinal and chest wall tumours, and benign, including pneumothorax, pleural diseases and benign mediastinal conditions. He adopts a highly personalised approach ranging from conventional open surgery to the latest minimally invasive techniques. He has more than ten years of specific experience in robotic technology and regularly uses the da Vinci Xi and da Vinci Single Port (SP) platforms to perform highly precise procedures with minimal surgical impact on the patient.
His research focuses on the early diagnosis of lung cancer through screening and on the application of the most advanced robotic technologies. The aim is to identify tumours at an early stage in order to enable highly precise radical treatments, reducing surgical impact and preserving patients’ quality of life. He also participates in national and international translational and multidisciplinary studies.
He is a member of the leading scientific societies in the field, including the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons(ESTS), the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the Società Italiana di Chirurgia Toracica(SICT), and the Società Italiana di Endoscopia Toracica (SIET). He has also been a member of the Clinical Robotic Surgical Association (CRSA), the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS), and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS).
He is the author and co-author of approximately 80 scientific publications in indexed international journals and book chapters, with an H-index of 20 on Scopus. He regularly participates as a speaker at national and international congresses and is extensively involved in tutoring and teaching medical students and doctors in specialist training.
