Dr. Roberto Bassani is Head of the Spine Surgery team at the IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant’Ambrogio. He also collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1992 from the University of Pavia, where he later specialized in Orthopedics and Traumatology five years later.
His clinical and scientific activity focuses on the treatment of congenital (deformity) and degenerative spinal diseases within the field of spine surgery, with particular attention to the study and practice of anterior approaches to the spine, and to the development of minimally invasive and “non-fusion” techniques (disc prostheses, anterior spinal surgical approaches, and endoscopic thoracic spine surgery).
During his career, Dr. Roberto Bassani has performed more than 3,000 major spinal surgery procedures, including 900 anterior approaches to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine for the treatment of spinal trauma, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal canal stenosis, cervical and lumbar degenerative disc disease, vertebral metastatic tumors, infections and segmental spinal instability. He also works as a Visiting Surgeon at several Italian hospitals where he performs lumbar and thoracic spine surgery using anterior approaches with both minimally invasive and traditional techniques.
He has gained extensive international experience. From 1998 to 2006 he trained at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis, the Institut Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris, the Strasbourg University Hospitals, the Zentralklinik Bad Berkain Weimar and the Sutter Neuroscience Medical Group in Sacramento. In 2000 he obtained in Paris the Training License in Spinal Surgery from the European Association of Research Groups for Spinal Osteosynthesis. In 2009 he received the ARGOS First Prize Winner award.
He is a speaker at international congresses on minimally invasive spine surgery and delivers keynote lectures at conferences of the Japan Society for the Study of Surgical Technique for Spine and Spinal Nerves. His scientific work has been published in indexed journals such as European Spine Journal, International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and International Journal of Clinical Medicine.
Since the academic year 2018–2019 he has been teaching surgical anatomy of anterior spinal approaches at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Residency School of the University of Milan.
In 2020 he successfully obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) from the Italian Ministry of University and Research, qualifying as Associate Professor (Second Level) in Orthopedics and Traumatology.
He is a member of several scientific societies, including the Italian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SIOT), the Italian Spine Surgery Society (GIS), the European Association of Research Groups for Spinal Osteosynthesis (ARGOS), Eurospine, the Scoliosis Research Society and AO Spine International.
