Roberto Chiesa

Professor Roberto Chiesa is Head of the Vascular Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan and Full Professor of Vascular Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, where he specialised in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He subsequently moved to the University of Siena to specialise in Cardiac Surgery.

During his training, he gained several experiences abroad: he attended Claude Bernard University in Lyon, where he carried out advanced training and research in abdominal and peripheral vascular surgery and kidney and pancreas transplantation; the Thoracic and Cardiac Surgical Unit of Harefield Hospital in Harefield-Middlesex, where he further developed his experience in thoraco-abdominal aortic surgery and cardiac surgery, heart transplantation; and finally Baylor College of Medicine at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, where he completed his experience in the surgery of thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Professor Roberto Chiesa’s clinical and research activity focuses on:

• surgery of the thoraco-abdominal aortic district;
• endovascular and hybrid treatment of diseases affecting the aortic arch, descending thoracic aorta and thoraco-abdominal aorta due to congenital and acquired abnormalities;
• treatment of extracranial carotid lesions;
• minimally invasive endovascular treatment of carotid stenoses using stents and anti-embolic cerebral protection systems.

He has performed more than 25,000 surgical procedures as first operator.

Professor Chiesa is the author of 12 monographs and more than 450 scientific publications appearing in accredited journals such as Journal of Vascular Surgery, European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Annals of Vascular Surgery, Journal of Endovascular Therapy and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He was a member of the Committee for the definition of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) Guidelines on thoracic aortic disease, published in 2017, and of the joint Guidelines of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) on aortic arch disease, published in 2019.

He also participates in numerous international trials for the development of abdominal and thoracic aortic endoprostheses for the treatment of aneurysms and dissections. He has taken part as a speaker in more than 500 national and international conferences.

Professor Chiesa is a member of the most prestigious national and international Vascular Surgery societies and has chaired and organised for 15 years the international congress Aortic Surgery - How to do it, which brings together leading experts in the fields of vascular surgery, cardiac surgery and cardiac anaesthesia, with more than 1,000 participants from all over the world.
