Dr. Sandro Carnio is a general surgeon and colonproctologist at the Colonproctological and Pelvic Floor Surgery Unitof IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, directed by Dr. Angelo Stuto. He is also active at Smart Clinic Torino.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1991 from the University of Padua with a grade of 104/110 and specialized with honors in General Surgery in 1998 at the same university. As early as 1988, he attended the Second Surgical Clinic of Padua, focusing specifically on colonproctological and oncological surgery.

In 1999 he received a research fellowship at the University of Padua for the project “Doxorubicin and Cisplatin in intraoperative hyperthermic-antiblastic perfusion for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis and sarcomatosis.” He is the author of more than 30 scientific publications in national and international journals and has participated in numerous conferences as a speaker, moderator, and discussant. He has also carried out teaching activities as a lecturer in advanced courses and master’s programs in colonproctology.

He is the creator and co-author of the PD-Procto software, the official tool of the Italian Society of Colonproctology, and has collaborated on several healthcare IT projects at the national level.

Since 1999 he has been a medical consultant at the General Surgery Department of Bassano del Grappa, where since 2000 he has been responsible for the Proctology Service and currently holds a high-specialization position in colonproctological surgery. Since 2013 he has served as senior assistant surgeon in the same department.

His clinical practice is strongly oriented toward the use of the most advanced surgical technologies. He performs endoscopic microsurgery for the removal of polyps and benign rectal tumors (TAMIS and TAMIS 3D), 3D laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery for the treatment of colorectal diseases and pelvic floor disorders. He has gained extensive experience in the treatment of complex anal fistulas using biological tissues (AFP – Anal Fistula Plug) and regenerative techniques with adipose-derived stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

He treats hemorrhoidal disease using a wide range of techniques, from traditional hemorrhoidectomy to mucoprolapsectomy, as well as laser procedures and outpatient rubber band ligation. He also specializes in pelvic floor disorders and constipation, performing pelvic suspension procedures with laparoscopic and robotic approaches, often in collaboration with multidisciplinary urogynecological teams.

In the field of general surgery, he performs abdominal gastrointestinal surgery and abdominal wall surgery, including inguinal hernia repair with traditional, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques, as well as abdominal wall reconstruction and laparoscopic and robotic TAPP procedures. In recent years he has contributed significantly to the development of robotic surgery applied to colorectal tumors and abdominal wall surgery.

Over the last 10 years, his personal surgical experience includes more than 3,000 procedures, both as primary surgeon and tutor, with extensive expertise in elective, urgent, and emergency surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic procedures.
