Professor Giampiero Campanelli is Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Insubria and Director of the General Surgery Unit – Day & Week Surgery Section at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio. He also collaborates with Palazzo della Salute Wellness Clinic.
He is Director of the Hernia Center of Milan: the first University High-Specialization Research Center for Abdominal Wall Diseases and Reparative Surgery, with a dual location at Casa di Cura La Madonnina and IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio.
During his career, Professor Campanelli developed considerable experience in General Surgery within several Italian and international institutions. He became a pioneer of minimally invasive surgery for abdominal hernia and, in addition to routine general surgery, developed new surgical approaches and methods for reconstruction/repair of inguinal hernias and abdominal wall hernias: MILA; HUG; THOPA; PIPS – sports hernia (inguinal pubic pain syndrome), with minimally invasive techniques under local anesthesia, as well as laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
His academic and professional life has been accompanied by intense scientific activity. He has been invited as speaker or operating surgeon at international congresses and societies with prestigious appointments, including, among others: President of the European Hernia Society (EHS), President of the Italian Day Surgery Society, President of the Italian Multispecialty Society of Young Surgeons, and many others. Added to these are his activities as Founder and President of the Day Surgery Foundation, honorary member of the APHS (Asia Pacific Hernia Society), honorary President of AMHES Africa – Middle East Hernia Society, and honorary member of the German Hernia Society.
Professor Campanelli also holds the prestigious role of Editor in Chief of the international scientific journal "HERNIA", published by Springer Nature.
He has received numerous national and international recognitions, such as the Giuseppe Guidetti Award, the Forum Giovani Award (Golden Plaque) during the National Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery; the Merck Sharp Dome Award as young researcher, assigned during the 27th Biennial World Congress of the International Congress of Surgeons in São Paulo, Brazil; the “Giuseppe Zannini” Award, conferred by the Italian Multispecialty Society of Young Surgeons to personalities who brought honor to the country, during the Annual Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery, and many others.
These are added to certificates of gratitude and esteem received from prestigious national and international societies, such as the Italian Society of Surgery, the American Hernia Society, the Japanese Hernia Society, the Turkish Hernia Society and the Lebanese Society for General Surgery.
With more than 14,000 surgical procedures performed, Professor Giampiero Campanelli has extensive international experience as a specialist surgeon in the treatment of inguinal hernias and abdominal wall hernias, and scientifically with dozens of volumes and monographs on surgical technique, as well as participation as speaker or live surgeon in 614 national and international congresses.
Finally, Professor Campanelli, through the Day Surgery Foundation which he chairs, has carried out more than 20 humanitarian missions in the most disadvantaged countries of the world.
