Alessandro Marugo

Professor Alessandro Marugo is an endocrinologist and Head of the Thyroid Center at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1996 from the University of Genoa with a thesis on hyperprolactinemia. In 2001, he completed his specialization in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the same university.

Since 2003, he has served as a Consultant Endocrinologist in the Endocrinology Department – Thyroid Center at Galliera Hospital in Genoa and as Professor of Endocrinology at the School of Specialization in Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Genoa.

With more than 25 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders, his clinical practice focuses primarily on thyroid and parathyroid diseases. He has performed more than 262,000 thyroid ultrasounds and 24,000 thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsies and thyroid ethanol ablation procedures.

At Policlinico San Donato, he performs specialist consultations, thyroid ultrasounds, and thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsies.

Thyroid fine-needle aspiration is a minimally invasive procedure in which a sample is collected from a thyroid nodule and examined under a microscope to determine whether it is benign or malignant.

His areas of expertise include thyroid diseases, thyroid nodules, pre-pregnancy thyroid screening, parathyroid disorders, adrenal diseases, ovarian disorders, hirsutism and alopecia, menopause and osteoporosis, overweight and obesity, pituitary disorders, pancreatic diseases, andrology and erectile dysfunction, as well as internal medicine consultations.

He is an active member of AME – Italian Association of Endocrinologists, AIT – Italian Thyroid Association, ATA – American Thyroid Association, SIEDP – Italian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology, the Italian Menopause Society, and SIE – Italian Society of Endocrinology.

He regularly participates in national and international scientific congresses.
