Biography

Professor Andrea Vignali is Head of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Disease Unit within the Colorectal Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. He is also Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1989 and later obtained his specialization in Emergency Surgery and Emergency Medicine at the same university in 1994.

During his career, Professor Vignali completed international training periods, particularly at the Colorectal Surgery Department of Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital in Spain. In 1995–1996 he also completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the Department of Colorectal Surgery of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA.

His medical activity focuses on digestive surgery, with particular attention to minimally invasive and robotic approaches, in addition to traditional surgery. His work mainly concerns both malignant and benign diseases of the colon and rectum, as well as surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases.

His experience also includes the treatment of proctological conditions. He applies minimally invasive techniques as well to several areas of general surgery. In particular, Professor Vignali performs day surgery procedures, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and abdominal wall reconstruction.

His scientific production includes more than 350 publications and numerous invited lectures at national and international congresses, as well as collaborations with prestigious international institutions. He has received several awards from international scientific societies, including the KARL Storz EAES Award (European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons), the Southern California Society Colon and Rectal Surgeon Award (American Society of Colorectal Surgeons), and recognition from the American College of Surgeons. His current H-Index is 47.

Professor Vignali is a member of several national and international scientific societies, including the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons, the European Society of Colorectal Surgeons, and the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery.
