Antonio Bartorelli

Professor Antonio Bartorelli is Head of the University Interventional Cardiology Unit at IRCCS Galeazzi - Sant’Ambrogio Hospital in Milan.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1978, he specialized in Cardiovascular Diseases in 1980 at the same university.

During his professional career, from 1984 to 1992, he was a researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) at the Center for Cardiovascular Research, based at the Chair of Cardiology of the University of Milan, Centro Cardiologico Monzino, IRCCS Milan.

From 1987 to 1989, he carried out experimental and clinical research as a Visiting Scientist at the Cardiology Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), in Bethesda, Maryland (United States), after receiving a NATO-CNR scholarship under the Advanced Fellowship Program for biological and medical sciences and, in 1989, an FAES Fellowship from the NHLBI. Since returning to Italy, he has continued clinical research in interventional cardiology, focusing on new devices and innovative techniques for the treatment of coronary atherosclerotic disease, acute myocardial infarction, and intravascular imaging.

From 1992 to 2022, he directed the Invasive, Diagnostic, and Interventional Cardiology Unit of Centro Cardiologico Monzino, IRCCS Milan.

As regards his academic career, he was first Associate Professor of Cardiology from 2001 to 2016 at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan and, since 2016, has been Full Professor of Cardiology at the same university.

Professor Bartorelli is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in interventional cardiology, particularly in the treatment and invasive diagnosis of atherosclerotic disease:

• coronary disease: angioplasty, drug-eluting stent implantation, intravascular imaging;
• peripheral disease: angioplasty with stent implantation in the carotid, iliac-femoral, and renal arteries, and vascular endoprosthesis implantation for the non-surgical correction of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

He has extensive and proven experience:

• in the percutaneous treatment of the most complex coronary diseases, including three-vessel disease, left main coronary artery disease, severely calcified stenoses, and bifurcation stenoses;
• in techniques used for structural heart diseases, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), closure of atrial septal defects (ASD), patent foramen ovale (PFO), and paravalvular leaks.

He has published 460 scientific articles in prestigious international scientific journals, with significant bibliometric results, and 25 book chapters in English. He serves as a scientific reviewer for leading journals in the field, including Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Interventions, European Heart Journal, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, EuroIntervention, and American Journal of Cardiology. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions and the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions.

Since 1995, he has been a Faculty Member of the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) meeting, one of the world’s leading congresses in interventional cardiology. He is also a member of the following scientific societies:

• European Society of Cardiology (ESC)
• Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology (GISE)
• Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC)
