Biography
Dr. Antonio Ponzo is an orthopedic surgeon at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato.
After graduating with highest honors in Medicine and Surgery from Sapienza University of Rome in 2012, he completed his specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the same university in 2018, graduating with top marks (70/70 cum laude). In 2016, he received the prestigious “Lamberto Perugia” Award for the best scientific contribution of the year.
In the hospital setting, he consolidated his surgical experience as a permanent Medical Officer at the historic CTO “A. Alesini” Hospital in Rome from 2019 to 2025, first within the Advanced Joint Replacement Surgery Unit and subsequently in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department.
Specialized in Sports Traumatology, Joint Replacement Surgery, and Robotic Surgery, his main areas of expertise include:
- knee and hip replacement surgery (both conventional and advanced robotic procedures using MAKO Stryker technology, with particular focus on the minimally invasive Bikini anterior hip approach);
- arthroscopic knee surgery (complex ligament reconstructions and meniscal repairs);
- regenerative medicine (PRP and mesenchymal cell therapies) and limb traumatology.
For more than seven years, he served as Orthopedic Surgeon for the Italian Women's National Football Team (FIGC), leading the medical staff during major international events, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.
He also served as Head of Orthopedics for S.S. Lazio’s Primavera team and collaborated with the Sports Medicine Institute of Sport e Salute at Paideia International Hospital.
Author of numerous scientific publications in indexed international journals, he regularly participates as a speaker at major national and international congresses, including SIOT, AAOS, SIA, and EFORT. He has also served as Scientific Director of the international “Focus on Football Medicine” meetings held at Rome’s Olympic Stadium.
