Biography

Dr Bruno Colombo is a senior consultant at the Headache and Facial Pain Centre within the Neurology Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Professor Massimo Filippi.

Dr Colombo also teaches at the School of Specialisation in Neurology and on the Medicine degree course in English at Vita-Salute University.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1983 from the University of Milan, where he specialised in Neurology in 1987. He subsequently worked at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London and at San Bartholomew's College, Department of Biochemistry, in London. He returned to Italy in 1989, working at the hospital in San Donato and, from 1990, at Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan.

Dr Colombo has always focused on highly disabling diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and headaches, in the fields of epidemiological, pharmacological and neuroimaging research. He has participated in numerous clinical studies on new drugs in the field of migraine and multiple sclerosis. He carries out outpatient and inpatient activities in the field of inflammatory diseases of the nervous system and headaches. His areas of interest include patients’ quality of life, such as fatigue, pain and balance disorders; the applications of neuroimaging to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of migraine and multiple sclerosis; and the use of new drugs to limit the impact of these diseases on patients’ biopsychosocial functioning.

He is the founder of the Headache and Facial Pain Centre at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, which he directed until 2026, for 25 years.

In terms of research activity, he participates in neuroimaging studies on the pathogenetic mechanisms of migraine and fatigue, as well as in clinical and instrumental studies on vestibular migraine and epidemiological studies on migraine.

He is founder and President of the Italian Neurological Association for Headache Research (ANIRCEF) and founder of the Italian Headache Foundation, of which he is a member of the board of directors.

He is the author and co-author of more than 273 publications in national and international scientific journals. His H-index is 69.

Dr Colombo is also editor of 4 books: "Brain and art", "the Musical Neurons", "Vestibular Migraine and related diseases" and "Vestibular migraine and other episodic vertigos: an update", all published by Springer International. He is a reviewer for 15 international scientific journals and has taken part in institutional programmes in the field of headaches, such as G19+2 Sanità and Motore Sanità.
