Biography
Professor Carlo Pappone is Head of the Clinical Arrhythmology Unit and Electrophysiology Laboratory at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in Milan. He is also a cardiologist, arrhythmologist and electrophysiologist at Casa di Cura La Madonnina. He is Full Professor of Cardiology at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele.
In 1986, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Federico II University of Naples, where he specialised in Cardiology four years later. In 1995, he obtained a PhD in Cardiovascular Diseases from the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
Professor Pappone performs all electrophysiological procedures, with particular interest in transcatheter ablation of atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardias and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), in both adult and paediatric patients.
In scientific research, he focuses on developing new therapeutic strategies for patients with atrial fibrillation and WPW and on preventing sudden arrhythmic death in congenital arrhythmogenic heart diseases.
More recently, his main area of interest has shifted towards the prevention of sudden death and the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with Brugada syndrome. He developed a new epicardial ablation procedure to identify and eliminate the mechanisms that trigger sudden death in these patients: to date, approximately 600 patients have been successfully treated.
An invited speaker and moderator at major national and international congresses in cardiology and arrhythmology, he is the author of 184 scientific articles, more than 30 book chapters and 184 presentations (16,814 citations, H-index 50).
He is a reviewer for numerous journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, JAMA, Circulation, European Heart Journal, American Heart Journal, American Journal of Cardiology, Circulation Arrhythmia Electrophysiology, Europace, Heart Rhythm, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, Giornale Italiano di Cardiologia and Giornale Italiano di Aritmologia e Cardiostimolazione.
In 2006, he received the Elite Reviewer Award from the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). He is a Fellow of numerous international cardiology societies, including the American Heart Association (AHA), European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and American College of Cardiology (ACC).
