Biography

Professor Francesco De Cobelli is Head of the Radiology Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan and Full Professor of Radiology at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele. He is also Director of the School of Specialisation in Diagnostic Radiology, Director of the International PhD Programme in Clinical and Experimental Medicine at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, and Head of the Clinical and Experimental Radiology Research Unit of the Experimental Imaging Centre at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1991, he specialised in Diagnostic Radiology at the same university in 1995. During his university years, he also trained in the United States, in particular gaining experience at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1988.

His clinical activity began in 1996 as a hospital assistant and subsequently as a first-level medical director in the Radiology Service of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan. He later became Area Coordinator for the scientific and teaching activities of the Radiology Service at the same institution and, from 2007, Head of the Magnetic Resonance Functional Unit within the Radiology Unit.

His main areas of clinical and research activity include magnetic resonance imaging, abdominal radiology, cardiac and oncological imaging, and interventional oncological radiology. In recent years, Professor Francesco De Cobelli has focused on the impact of diagnostic imaging in oncology, with particular regard to prostate MRI and imaging of hepatobiliary-pancreatic, gastro-oesophageal and colorectal tumours, as well as on interventional radiology in the management of liver and kidney tumours. More recently, he has also focused his interests on radiomics applied to solid tumours.

He is currently Principal Investigator or Co-PI of numerous multicentre trials mainly concerning interventional radiology and diagnostic imaging. Author of 212 scientific articles published in national and international journals, a book on magnetic resonance imaging and more than 30 book chapters, Professor Francesco De Cobelli has high H-index and citation values (Scopus: 38 and 5,668; Google Scholar: 45 and 7,606). He regularly participates in national and international congresses and conferences in the field. Professor De Cobelli was elected President of the Lombardy Regional Group of SIRM, Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology, for the 2025-2026 two-year term.
