Biography
Dr. Gaetano Gallo is a colorectal surgeon at the Colorectal Surgery Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. He is also a Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele.
In 2012, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University “Magna Graecia” of Catanzaro, where he also specialized in General Surgery in 2019.
He has gained significant national and international professional experience at renowned reference centers for colorectal and proctologic surgery, such as:
- Pelvic and Colorectal Surgery Unit, AC Camargo Center (São Paulo, Brazil)
- Oncologic and Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit, Academic Medical Center (Amsterdam)
- Royal London Hospital (London)
- IRCAD Strasbourg (France)
- Leading colorectal oncology surgery centers in Japan (National Cancer Center – Tokyo; Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research – Tokyo; Kyoto University Hospital – Kyoto; National Hospital Organization – Osaka).
He earned a European PhD and a Research Fellowship focused on the multiomic and translational approach in the treatment of colorectal neoplasms.
His clinical and research activity focuses on the digestive system, with a particular interest in colorectal surgery. He has developed notable expertise in diagnosing benign and malignant colorectal diseases and performs endoanal/ endorectal rotating-probe ultrasound, transvaginal and perineal ultrasound, as well as anorectal manometry and high-resolution anoscopy.
He carries out minimally invasive surgical treatments for functional pelvic floor disorders such as rectal prolapse, hemorrhoidal disease, perianal, pilonidal, and rectovaginal fistulas, diverticular disease, malignant and benign tumors of the anal canal and rectum, as well as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and sexually transmitted diseases of proctologic interest.
Dr. Gallo is the author of more than 350 publications and 20 book chapters in the field of general, colorectal, proctologic, and pelvic floor surgery. He has also participated as a speaker and faculty member in more than 200 national and international congresses.
He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery (SICCR), Secretary General of the Italian Multispecialty Society of Young Surgeons (SPIGC), and holds positions in the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS).
