Biography
Dr. Giorgio Burastero is an orthopedic surgeon with the C.A.S.C.O. team at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio in Milan and at the Center for Hip and Knee Revision Arthroplasty Surgery of Istituto Clinico Villa Aprica.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1992 from the University of Genoa. In the same year, he began his clinical activity as a volunteer physician at the Pediatric Orthopedics Service of Ospedale Civile San Martino in Genoa. In 1993, he obtained his medical license. He subsequently attended the Residency School in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Genoa, obtaining his specialist qualification in 1998.
During his training period, he completed an international research period at the University of Innsbruck (Austria), at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy, where he deepened his study of surgical anatomy and degenerative pathologies.
In 1999, he completed a fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham (Alabama, USA), where he carried out research and surgical training in arthroscopy and prosthetic surgery of the shoulder, knee, and elbow, with particular attention to athletes’ pathology.
In the same year, he began research activity with the foundation now known as ONLUS Livio Sciutto, formerly “Scienza e Vita”, a scientific collaboration that continues to this day.
From 2000, he served as First-Level Medical Director at the Complex Operative Unit of Prosthetic Surgery and Articular Rheumatism of Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, dedicating himself in particular to the development of arthroplasty surgery and the treatment of complex joint pathologies. Between 2006 and 2009, he was Head of Research Activity at the same Unit.
In 2008, he took on the direction of the Complex Operative Unit of Osteo-Articular Inflammatory Diseases at Santa Maria Misericordia Hospital in Albenga, a role he held for more than a decade. At the same time, from 2008 to 2019, he was lecturer in the First-Level University Master’s Program in Rehabilitation of Musculoskeletal Disorders at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, contributing to the training of physiotherapists and professionals in the field of musculoskeletal pathology.
From 2017 to 2019, he also served as Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Orthopedics and Traumatology II – Prosthetic Surgery Area at Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, consolidating his experience in the surgical management of advanced joint diseases.
Throughout his career, Dr. Burastero has developed a high level of specialization in primary hip and knee arthroplasty, with particular expertise in the management of prosthetic complications, both mechanical and infectious.
His activity also includes:
- the reconstruction of massive bone defects at the level of the pelvis, hip, femur, knee, and tibia;
- lower limb reconstruction and reconstructive surgery procedures, also using plastic surgery techniques;
- the management of free flaps in complex cases.
He is the author of numerous publications in orthopedics and prosthetic surgery, with over 1,000 scientific citations, an H-index of 17, and an i10-index of 24.
