Biography

Dr. Laura de Girolamo is a biologist and Director of the Laboratory of Biotechnology Applied to Orthopedics, as well as Director of RE.GA.IN (Regenerative Galeazzi Institute) at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio.

She graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Insubria in 2002 and obtained her PhD in Pharmacology, Chemotherapy, and Medical Toxicology in 2008 from the University of Milan.

She subsequently worked as a post-graduate researcher at the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the University of Milan, where she began focusing on biological treatments for bone and cartilage regeneration.

After completing her PhD, she continued to expand her expertise in regenerative medicine between the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi and several international centers, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital - Harvard University in Boston (USA).

Currently, Dr. de Girolamo holds a dual role as Director of the Laboratory of Biotechnology Applied to Orthopedics and Director of RE.GA.IN (Regenerative Galeazzi Institute) at IRCCS Galeazzi. These two entities—dedicated respectively to basic and clinical research—are fully integrated and share the common goal of developing and advancing the most effective regenerative medicine treatments in the musculoskeletal field.

Her primary research focus is regenerative medicine of musculoskeletal tissues, with particular attention to the development and optimization of biological techniques for joint regeneration, especially in osteoarthritis, and for tendon repair.

Over the years, she has particularly focused on the study of mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue or bone marrow, both for intraoperative use and for applications following in vitro expansion.

At Galeazzi Institute, she coordinates clinical trials involving the use of biotechnological products (orthobiologics) and, through the RE.GA.IN center, she is able to oversee the clinical application of research findings developed in the laboratory.

To date, Dr. de Girolamo has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is actively involved in several international scientific societies, including:

  • Chairwoman of the Basic Science Committee of SIAGASCOT (Italian Society of Arthroscopy, Knee, Upper Limb, Sports, Cartilage and Orthopedic Technologies)
  • Past Chairwoman of the Basic Science Committee of ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy)
  • Leader of the European Orthobiologics Initiative
