Mariangela Allocca

Dr. Mariangela Allocca is a gastroenterologist and Head of the Functional Unit dedicated to Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (MICI/IBD) within the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, directed by Professor Silvio Danese.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1995, she specialized in Gastroenterology at the same university in 1999.

She completed her training by obtaining, in 2004, both a PhD and the European Fellowship Diploma in Gastroenterology.

An internationally recognized gastroenterologist, she focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, including:

• Crohn’s disease
• ulcerative colitis
• microscopic colitis

with particular attention to managing the most complex cases through the use of the most innovative therapies.

She is an expert in the non-invasive assessment of IBD through bowel ultrasound, an area in which she has made a significant contribution to the development of innovative diagnostic tools.

She is, in fact, the creator of several ultrasound disease activity scores, including:

• the Milan Ultrasound Criteria for ulcerative colitis
• the Bowel Ultrasound Score for Crohn’s disease

She is a member of the European scientific committee involved in defining guidelines for the management of IBD and is President Elect of the international bowel ultrasound society IBUS.

Her research activity is carried out both nationally and internationally and is focused on the development of new pharmacological therapies for IBD.

Author of numerous scientific publications in international journals and book chapters, she is regularly invited as a speaker at national and international congresses and is actively involved in the leading scientific societies in the field.
