Biography

Professor Silvio Danese is Director of the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital and Full Professor of Gastroenterology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. He also collaborates with the Digestive Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Service of Policlinico San Marco in Zingonia.

His educational path began with obtaining a degree with honors in Medicine and Surgery in 1999 from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, where he subsequently specialized in Gastroenterology. At the same university, he obtained a PhD in Pathophysiology of Nutrition and Metabolism in 2006. From 2001 to 2004, he was in America as a Research Associate at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio (USA).

From a clinical point of view, the professor focuses on chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. He is also an expert in the field of digestive endoscopy and general gastroenterology.

As regards his research activity, he deals with the study of pathogenic mechanisms and the action of biological drugs in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.

He is a member of several scientific societies, including:

  • EUROPEAN CROHN’S AND COLITIS ORGANIZATION (ECCO, PAST PRESIDENT)
  • AMERICAN GASTROENTEROLOGY ASSOCIATION (AGA)
  • AMERICAN PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY (APS)
  • ITALIAN SOCIETY OF GASTROENTEROLOGY (SIGE)

He is the author and co-author of more than 750 publications in scientific journals in the field and book chapters. His H-index is 92 (Scopus). He constantly participates in national and international congresses in the field.
