Umberto Capitanio

Professor Umberto Capitanio is a urologist and Deputy Head Physician in the Urology Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.

He is Associate Professor at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele and has worked at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal in Canada. In June 2021, he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification for the role of Full Professor.

He is responsible for scientific research in the field of kidney cancer at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele and, since 2020, has been Head of the Functional Unit of Operative Endoscopy and Day Surgery at the same institution.

In 2020, he won the Matula Award, which is awarded to the urologist with the best scientific profile at national level.

Professor Capitanio carries out both outpatient and surgical activity, with a particular focus on endoscopic and robotic surgery.

His main areas of interest include the diagnosis and treatment of the main urological, andrological and uro-oncological conditions, including:

• kidney cancer;
• prostate cancer;
• bladder cancer;
• benign prostatic hyperplasia.

He is an Executive Member of the European Guidelines Panel and an Executive Member of the Surgical Video Committee of the European Association of Urology (EAU). He is also the founder and President of the Third Sector organisation “Storia Buffa ETS”, an association committed to supporting and promoting the psychosocial development and well-being of children.

He is the author of more than 540 original scientific articles published in international peer-reviewed journals (H-index 80, Google Scholar, 09.2026). He regularly participates as a speaker and moderator at international congresses in the field.
