Biography

Professor Oreste Davide Gentilini has been Head of the Breast Surgery Unit and Director of the Breast Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan since 2015. He also collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina and with the Policlinico San Marco in Bergamo.

He is also Associate Professor of General Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.

He is a tenured lecturer in the degree programs of Medicine and Surgery, the International MD Program, the School of Specialization in General Surgery, and the Midwifery Degree Program at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

He is also a founding member and president of the international research organization EUBREAST.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1993 and specialized in General Surgery in 1999 at the University of Milan, both with honors. Since 2001 he has devoted his clinical and research activity to breast cancer after completing a research fellowship in the United States at the New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center.

From 2000 to 2015 he worked at the European Institute of Oncology, where he eventually became Senior Vice Director of the Breast Division. For the same institute, he was also a member of the Scientific Review Board from 2014 to 2015.

He is responsible for research projects aimed at preserving the breast and axillary lymph nodes, even after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. He is an expert in familial and hereditary breast cancers and in preventive “risk-reduction” procedures in women at high genetic risk. He has personally performed more than 5,000 breast surgery procedures. He is the coordinator and principal investigator of the international multicenter SOUND trial on axillary staging in women with early breast cancer.

Since 2018 he has been a founding member, board member, and vice president of the international breast cancer research association EU-BREAST (EUropean Breast cancer REsearch Association of Surgical Trialists). Since 2019 he has been a member of the board of ANISC – the Italian National Association of Breast Surgeons.

Since 2012 he has been a member of the European expert panel on breast cancer in young women and during pregnancy. Dr. Gentilini is also a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology and since 2018 he has been a Specialty Editor of the journal The Breast (Impact Factor 3.4). He is the author of more than 100 international publications and has been an invited speaker at more than 100 national and international conferences.
