Viktoryia LuhakovaWhen a person undergoing dialysis needs to travel or temporarily stay away from their usual dialysis center, having access to safe, reliable, and well-organized specialist care becomes essential.
To meet this need, the Dialysis Center at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele offers a dedicated service for international patients who require dialysis treatments during their stay in Milan.
The service is available to both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients who need to continue their treatment without interruption. Thanks to a structured organization and a highly specialized team, the center ensures continuity of care while maintaining the highest standards of clinical safety.
In this context, San Raffaele serves as a point of reference for dialysis patients who are in Milan for work, study, tourism, or personal reasons and wish to continue their treatment in a highly specialized healthcare environment.
Personalized treatments and advanced technology
The San Raffaele Dialysis Center, led by Professor Chiara Lanzani, offers all major forms of hemodialysis treatment, including:
- Conventional hemodialysis (HD);
- Online hemodiafiltration (online HDF);
- Hemofiltration (HF).
Treatments can be performed using any type of vascular access, allowing the team to accommodate a wide range of clinical needs.
Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis can also receive specialist support at the center, particularly those using Fresenius systems.
Remote pre-treatment clinical assessment
One of the most innovative aspects of the service is the possibility of completing the preliminary clinical assessment without requiring an in-person visit. Before treatment, a nephrologist reviews the patient’s medical documentation and evaluates their suitability for dialysis at the center.
Only in specific situations may a brief video consultation be required to further assess clinical details and ensure maximum patient safety.
A comprehensive service for international dialysis patients
The program is managed by professionals with extensive experience in caring for patients with chronic kidney disease. The multidisciplinary team includes nephrologists and dialysis-specialized nurses who follow established protocols for:
- patient intake and admission;
- clinical assessment;
- treatment planning and scheduling.
The service is provided within an accredited hospital certified according to current national standards, offering patients access to a highly qualified healthcare setting.
To facilitate care for international patients, staff members speak English, French, and Spanish.
In addition, both the cost estimate and the clinical report provided after treatment can be issued in English, facilitating communication with patients and their home dialysis centers.
How to access the service at the San Raffaele Dialysis Center
To allow for an accurate clinical assessment, patients must submit documentation from their home dialysis center, including:
- an up-to-date dialysis prescription and treatment record;
- a brief medical history;
- details of current medications and treatment.
Requests should be submitted at least 10 working days in advance. Confirmation of the booking depends on dialysis station availability during the requested period.
In most cases, treatment is provided on an outpatient basis. Hospital admission is considered only when there are specific clinical indications requiring inpatient care.
Fees are determined according to the type of dialysis treatment provided and any additional services requested. The center also evaluates, on a case-by-case basis, the possibility of establishing agreements with international insurance providers.
